Chapter 3 - The Layout

Note: The software I used to design the draft for my man cave is on the following site: http://freebies.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=freebies&cdn=hobbies&tm=6&gps=140_210_1419_702&f=11&tt=11&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.bhg.com/bhg/category.jhtml%3Fcategoryid%3D/templatedata/bhg/category/data/arrangearoomtest.xml

However, you are only alowed to save within that site. To get my own copy, I used the print-screen function and pasted it onto microsoft paint and saved it as a .bmp file.

Those of you who have read the first posts of my blog have seen the mess that is my basement. Now it is time to see what I am going to do with the space once it is cleaned up. I proudly present to you, draft one of my man cave:

Once down the stairs, there will be a sectional sofa to the right. This sofa is facing a white wall, which will be perfect for the projector (note: there is a tv on the wall in the picture. This is just to represent where the projector will shoot onto). The projector will likely have its own desk on wheels, so that I can set it out of the way when not being used. I was thinking of mounting it on the ceiling, but seeing as I want to connect it to a laptop and to a Nintendo Wii, it would be impractical to have it on the ceiling. So, the Wii and the projector will have a small stand on wheels (not in picture)

Beside the sectional sofa, is a bookshelf, about 5-6 feet in height (I have a couple models I am looking at.) I plan on putting a small stereo on the top shelf. On the two middle shelves, I am going to put runners on them so they slide out. One will searve as a slide-out bar for mixing drinks. Under the shelf above it (which will also slide out) will be a rack for wine glasses and a small battery operated pod light (beer glasses will go on top of this shelf.) Other "drinks" can go on the bottom shelf.

In the corner on the bottom right, is a dart board.

In the middle of the room is a card table with chairs. Eventually, I would like to have a bumper pool/poker table, but as they are a bit expensive, they are out of my budget for this year. I will use the table and chairs I currently have for the time being.

In the smaller space at the top of the image will be workout equiptment. I forsee having an eliptical machine and the weight lifting machine that you saw in the picture. To the left of it will go a refridgerator (for gaterade and "other" beverages.) and the small freezer (simply because that is the only place I have for it.)

Decor: the room is painted a darker blue on the bottom half of the walls, and white on the top half. Where the paints meet is a cheesy strip of wallpaper with sports equipment on it... but I think it works so I am going to leave it. On the white upper half of the wall (other than the dart board) I am going to hang pictures of different athletes from my favourite sports teams. Peyton Manning from the Indianapolis Colts, Joe Carter and Paul Molitor from the Toronto Blue Jays, Michael Jordon of the Chicago Bulls, and Weyne Gretsky from the Edmonton Oilers. Between the framed pictures will go various medals and sports memorabilia from my sports past. Instead of buying expensive pictures from a sports store, I am simply going to buy 8x11 frames from the Dollar store, print pictures from the internet on photo paper, and frame them myself. It is not authentic, but is a heack of a lot cheaper and will look nice just the same.

And there you have it. This is my plan. Again my timeline is 7 months, and my budget: $800.
